5.3 million records were sold in 2021, the highest total since 1990

UK vinyl sales reached a 21-year high in 2021, according to new data shared by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

Information released by the organisation shows that 5.3 million records were sold over the 12 months of the year, which was the highest total since 1990. This marks an increase of 11 percent on 2020's figures, making it the 14th consecutive year of growth for the format. Vinyl LPs also now represent more than a quarter of physical format purchases in the UK.

Much of the boost can be put down to sales of albums by mainstream pop acts, with Adele's 30 and Ed Sheeran's = proving particularly popular, while ABBA's comeback album, Voyage, sold 29,891 records in its first week, making it the fastest selling LP in the UK of the century so far.
