Theo Parrish To Oversee Next ‘DJ-Kicks’ Compilation

Out in October, the mix is an homage to the present and future of the music scene in his hometown of Detroit

Theo Parrish will mix the next instalment in the long-running DJ-Kicks mix series.

The Detroit legend’s mix takes in 19 tracks, and is specially titled DJ-Kicks: Detroit Forward. It is intended to serve as an homage to the present and future of music emerging out of the Motor City. 18 of the tracks featured are exclusive to the mix, while the other – a collaboration between Parrish himself and Duminie DePorres called ‘Real Deal’ – was released earlier this year. Check the mix’s full tracklist via Bandcamp, and listen to one track from it – a cut by Ian Fink called ‘Moonlite (Duality/Detroit Version)’ – below.

In a statement about his mix, Parrish said: "Detroit creates. But rarely imitates. Why? We hear and see many from other places do that with what we originate. No need to follow. Get it straight. In the Great Lakes, there’s always more under the surface – more than what appears to penetrate the top layer of attention and recognition. What about those that defy tradition? Those that sidestep the inaccurate definitions often given from outside positions? This is that evidence. Enjoy."

Parrish’s contribution to the DJ-Kicks series follows on from previous instalments in recent years by the likes of Jessy Lanza and Avalon Emerson.

!K7 will release Theo Parrish’s DJ-Kicks: Detroit Forward on October 28, 2022.
