Portugal festival Semibreve has finalised the lineup for its 2021 edition, taking place next month.
For the first time, the Braga event will this year host an opening concert on a Thursday night, with CV & JAB (AKA Christina Vantzou and John Also Bennett) playing an intimate live show at UNESCO world heritage site Bom Jesus do Monte Basilica. There will also be special filmed performances by Zeena Parkins, Rabih Beaini and Rafael Toral within the gardens of the Duarte Sequeira Gallery; an improvisation workshop by Zeena Parkins in the Calouste Gulbenkian Music Conservatory; and a series of talks focused on some of the commissions for this year’s festival, featuring Flora Yin-Wong, Yvette Janine Jackson, Judith Hamman, Rabih Beaini, Angélica Salvi, Rui Miguel Abreu and Heitor Alvelos.
Previously confirmed performances at this year’s edition of the festival come from Laurel Halo and Oliver Coates, who will combine for their first on-stage collaborative performance; Nik Void and Klara Lewis, who will team up with visual backing from Pedro Maia; and Flora Yin-Wong, who will debut a new multichannel electronic piece.
This year marks Semibreve’s 11th edition, having celebrated a decade of festivals with a virtual event in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s edition of the festival will take place in full compliance with Portuguese COVID-19 rules, with capacities for each event limited. They will be increased if local health protocols allow for this to happen safely.
Semibreve will take place from October 28 to 31, 2021. Find more information here.
