This month Bristol’s Subtext label, home of Paul Jebanasam, Roly Porter and Emptyset, has released its first record of 2014, Eric Holm’s Andøya. Named after the Arctic island where it was recorded, it’s a haunting, frosty suite of crackle, fog and subtle rhythmic presence. It was constructed from recordings made during a trip to the island, 300km north of the Arctic Circle, where Holm attached a contact microphone to a single military telegraph pole and captured the sounds of it shifting within the remote landscape.

To accompany its release, James Ginzburg of Emptyset has created a video for album track ‘Stave’ which matches its immersive chill with images of the island filmed in March and April of this year. You can watch it via the embed above, and for more on both Eric Holm and Subtext, click here to visit the Subtext website.
