Yoko Ono has collaborated with Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon for a charity single, a fourteen minute long piece entitled ‘Early In The Morning’, released today digitally through Chimera Music. There’s no audio as of yet, but it’s available from here, and will subsequently be released as a limited 10" vinyl platter. Proceeds from the sale of the track will go towards Ashinaga’s ‘Rainbow House’ project, and will help with the construction of a Rainbow House in the Tohoku region of Japan: a safe support centre for children who lost their parents in the recent tsunami.
There has been no activity from Sonic Youth for a while, and this is one of the first pieces of collaborative music we’ve seen released from Moore and Gordon since the pair split last year. The connection with Yoko Ono, however, runs deep, so it’s perhaps unsurprising that they’ve collaborated – they’ve paid homage to Ono’s work in the past, on Goodbye 20th Century, alongside covers of other key 20th century composers like John Cage, Steve Reich and Pauline Oliveros.
