As we previously reported, Unsound Festival Krakow has started to announce a series of artists booked for this year’s festival, with the previous announcement a couple of weeks ago featuring the likes of Sasha Grey’s aTelecine, V/Vm, Julia Holter, Tim Hecker & Oneohtrix Point Never. The festival, which runs from 14th-21st October, is one of Europe’s finest hubs for interesting and forward thinking music, giving equal airing to artists from across a wide range of disciplines – as well as art installations, lectures and discussions – throughout venues across Krakow. It’s also beautifully organised, arranged over the course of a week in such a way that it’s possible to see almost everyone on the line-up, and as such comes thoroughly recommended. In the wake of those first names being announced, the festival have now confirmed the second batch of artists for this year’s festival, which is assembled under the theme ‘THE END’. It’s headed up by Chicago’s mighty Hieroglyphic Being, whose DJ sets and live performances work around the bleeding edges of house, disco and post-punk, and whose unique approach gives the impression of bending time itself. A raft of other dance acts have been announced too: fresh from their gig at Corsica Studios last weekend, Donato Dozzy and Neel’s Voices From The Lake will be showing off their live set of hypnotic ambient techno; the peerless Shackleton will be making an appearance for one of his whirling, polyrhythmic club sets, as will ex-Vex’d producer of sci-fi-leaning, synth driven club music Kuedo. Hyperdub’s house/pop producer Cooly G will be playing live, Chicago’s Traxman – who recently released Planet Mu’s best footwork album to date – will be DJing, and Tri Angle’s Evian Christ will also be performing.
Robert Henke (aka Monolake) will be presenting his audiovisual project ATOM, a collaboration with visual artist Christopher Bauder. "The piece involves 64 illuminated helium balloons, their motion controlled and triggered by sound," says the blurb. And on the subject of atoms, Uwe Schmidt will be giving the Polish premiere of his Raster-Noton signed AtomTM project, whose album Winterreise from earlier this year is a softly sketched view of the music of Schubert. On the noisier side of things, Kevin Drumm will be playing live, and Ben Frost will be playing a live show with two drummers – Shahzah Ismaily of Secret Chiefs 3, and Liturgy/Guardian Alien man Greg Fox.
And finally, someone we’ve been listening to a lot this year: Dominick Fernow’s Vatican Shadow, whose three LP releases have been some of our favourite dark, stern, politicised records of 2012 so far. He’s playing in London a few days before, and his Unsound show will be one of only 3 shows on this European trip.
