Good old NME, jumping on the Cure just as they’ve released one of their worst ever albums. Robert Smith and Co will be given the Godlike Genius Award at the NME prizegiving assembly next year, and will headline the Big Gig at the 02 on Friday, February 28th.
You won’t be getting one of those excellent three and a half hour Cure marathons where you can hardly piss for fear of missing ‘A Forest’ – the Big Gig features a full supporting cast of artistes. However, Robert Smith said that the Cure would play a set that represents their long career. Speaking about the Godlike Genius gong, Smith said, "I think it is a recognition of all The Cure has done over the years, so it would be pretty dumb to accept the award with a, ‘hey! Have you heard our new stuff?’. So we won’t be doing that! We are not going to turn up and start being weird!"
He added: "We’ll play some new stuff, some old stuff and some stuff from in between, trying to distil 30 years into the set!"
