Verso Books are republishing the seminal Afrofuturist book More Brilliant Than the Sun: Adventures in Sonic Fiction in its second edition since its original 1998 release.
More Brilliant Than the Sun, by the British-Ghanaian theorist Kodwo Eshun, explores the intersections between black music and science fiction. Covering genres from jazz to dub to jungle, Eshun’s book includes analyses of artists like Sun Ra, Alice Coltrane, Dr. Octagon, Parliament and Underground Resistance.
It’s a favourite of musicians, fans and journalists alike. tQ writers have referenced More Brilliant Than the Sun and Eshun’s other work when writing about Cajmere, collage and Sun Ra Arkestra.
The upcoming edition includes a new introduction from Kodwo Eshun and contributions from filmmaker John Akomfrah and Steve Goodman aka Hyperdub label head Kode9. You can pre-order it here ahead of its release in October.
