Black Midi Split

tQ favourites have confirmed they're done "indefinitely"

Black Midi have split up.

During an Instagram live chat this past weekend, vocalist Geordie Greep was asked when the band would be writing new music. He replied in the chat that “Black Midi was an interesting band that’s now indefinitely over”, that there would be “no more Black Midi’ and “it’s over”.

On Sunday (August 11), bassist Cameron Picton confirmed the news, adding: “We’d agreed not to say anything about ‘breaking up’ so I was as blindsided as everyone else last night but maybe in a different way. I guess sometimes all you can say is lol.”

The band’s management have since also got in touch with The Quietus to add a little more nuance to the news: “After a successful tour including South American dates, they agreed to have a break and do some solo work, with the understanding the Black Midi door [would] be left open.”

Picton is currently working on a new project called Camera Picture, while Greep is taking part in a residency at London’s Map Studio Cafe. For information on the latter project, head here.

To mark tQ’s love of the group, which began in small gigs, continued through three Album of the Week awards, and their incredible headlining set at our 15th birthday gig last year, we’ve turned over The Portal to our best of our writing on the band. You can find that here.
