Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6. The Mahavishnu OrchestraVisions of the Emerald Beyond

Not long after that, I was going through a bad patch, for a few  reasons I won’t go into. I couldn’t get gigs in London. Then I was offered a five-nights-a-week gig in Birmingham. Not that I told them I didn’t live in Birmingham. I had a white Reliant three-wheeler back then because you could get one with only a motorcycle licence. It had a cassette player in it too, and two speakers, which was the most amazing thing. So I’d spent half my life on the road listening to the two cassettes I had. This was one of them.
