Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. Ivor CutlerDandruff

Someone at my school played it and I was like, ‘what on earth is this?’ There’s a level where it’s absurd and a bit twee and quite comically light, but it’s also dark and really odd. It’s another of these pieces of art that creates such a powerful, unique universe. He creates this Ivor Cutler universe where there’s something called gruts that you eat or whatever, and it’s so bizarre but he makes you believe it. I love playing bits of his pieces in DJ sets, as little intros and stuff like that. A lot of the time if I play something like that, there’s basically no reaction, maybe it’s too odd and it just goes through people.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Keeley Forsyth, Alex Kapranos
