Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6.

T. Rex – The Slider
‘Bang a Gong’ [‘Get It On’] was on classic rock radio a lot, so I was sort of aware of the band but then when I was about 19-20, I got Electric Warrior and The Slider and that stuff was pretty exciting. I liked Marc Bolan’s twist on psychedelic music, he was taking the things I liked about that but doing it in a slightly cleverer, sexier way. I loved his guitar playing. His lyrics got a lot more weird and esoteric later on, but back then it was funky, and showy – you know, like, if you’re going to get out there and play the guitar, then do it! Let’s make it a show! Of course we’ve never been like that, and maybe that’s what makes it so appealing.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Lord Spikeheart, Tom Ravenscroft
