Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

1. BjorkVespertine

I must have been in High School when I first heard this record. I can’t remember exactly when it was, but I specifically remember going to Best Buy – which I wouldn’t go to for music now – knowing that I was going to get a Björk album. I got to the section and I didn’t even know what to look at. I basically picked the one with the prettiest cover. I remember just lying on the floor listening to it in the dark on full blast. It’s just so beautiful and so weird. But at the time there was no Wikipedia or anything, so it was hard to find out more about musicians.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: The Anchoress, Shabaka Hutchings, Susanna, Teju Cole, Charlotte Church
