For the best part of a decade J’Kerian Morgan has blended provocative performances to their deconstructed club music to take an unflinching look at some of the most important issues of today. Just listen to them narrating the danger imposed on queer people of colour on ‘Hunted’, the lead single from their latest record Power: "Brown skin masculine frame, that’s a target".
At first glance, it can be difficult to connect Lotic to pop music – Heterocetera, for instance, was a strangely gothic outing. Power, however, lands closer to pop’s gates. One moment it channels early 00s Björk and the next a scuzzy bop to grind to, next brash noise, the next pivotal social commentary. When looking at the record through the lens of their Baker’s Dozen – featuring a lot of weird cuts from popular albums – this diversity makes perfect sense. It’s a brilliant selection of powerful – for the most part female – artists who might light the fire of pride to bolster a young queer identity.
