Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

2. PenpalPenpal

I was listening to Penpal age 16 or 17, at a time when I was feeling very low, and I would put on the most depressing stuff. This and American Football’s self titled album were on loop at that time, I was just making myself sadder. Penpal are a very small math rock band – Mid-west emo or whatever the tag was on Bandcamp, they’re like American Football. When I was 15 or so, I would go on Bandcamp every day and check what was new in the math rock tab – a lot of the stuff was free at that time as well. So I downloaded and listened to a lot of music – a lot of it’s very depressing!

You might disagree but hearing all this math rock and emo in your choices made me understand that your music is actually really emotional.

Yeah, it wasn’t at the beginning at all – it’s only in the past three or four years. I don’t think I was really attached to what I was making before.
