Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6. Arvo PärtTabula Rasa

The first time I heard this record, I remember I felt the depths of my heart. It really touched me and just felt very imploring. There was something about it that really resonated with me hearing it for the first time at 17. I think almost all of these on the list are records that I discovered on my first year of college, because that was when I think I was feeling the most influenced by new music. I’m still very influenced by new music that I hear of course, but that was the period when I was most spongey. It was at such a prime time for me, because I didn’t really know what I wanted my music to sound like yet, so I was just trying on everything and I’m still doing that but I feel like I have a stronger sense of preference now of what I want my compositional voice to sound like.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Simon Fisher Turner, Jarboe, Agnes Obel, Mick Harvey
