Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

7. Gorecki – Symphony No. 3

That’s an incredible piece of music. You listen to it once, twice, three times, it has an initial hit and it’s incredible, the textures and stuff, but it’s also, I won’t say it’s like a joke – but the punchline, once you hear it once it doesn’t affect you as much.

The Verdi stuff keeps on giving and giving and giving but by design this is reaching to one epiphany and that was pretty influential in the 90s when I heard it.

With Lift To Experience it really was hitting an epiphany you know, where wow! That was where post rock started and it was all building and building and building using those crescendos and decrescendos– if you heard the old early Mogwai aesthetic where you can build distortion onto another distortion.
