Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

I found this highly unusual disc in a charity shop a few years ago. The whole record is just two blokes (who know a lot about sound recording) discussing different microphones and things like ways to eliminate tape hiss. That’s very important to me because sometimes I forget to put Dolby on my audio cassette recordings of my songs, and then when I send them to boy bands like Westlife or Radiohead, they send me them straight back. Why? Because they found them just too hissy! The two Bobs even give advice on the durability of CDs (which were soon to become commercially available – this is obviously quite an old recording) I’m sure at one point they even say you can spread jam on them and they’ll still play. I think we now know they were being just a little over-optimistic.
