7. Nação ZumbiDa Lama Ao Caos
Nação Zumbi is a very important band in the Brazilian music scene, they collaborated with people like Gilberto Gil and always pushed their fans to think with an open mind, musically and politically. It’s also worth mentioning that their drummer Pupilo is one of my all-time favourites, creating a style of playing from the north of Brazil that is very unique and beautiful to hear. It’s like I can see exactly where they’re coming from geographically. I can hear those rhythms. Like if you heard a band from the North of England, somehow you would know.
Even by trying your hardest to emulate your favourite band you’re going to sound different because of the circumstances of location, of equipment. You always end up sounding a bit wonky and I like that because you’re not really that thing, you know. With Sepultura we tried to emulate European bands and we realised later that the Brazilian thing could be more part of us so we created our own identity. Then suddenly we sounded more like ourselves and less like just another metal band.
