For me, Dr Octagon is the best rapper ever. I’m the biggest fan of Kool Keith in general but the stuff he talked about here was just out of control. He was rapping about space and then of course he went into this crazy gynaecologist skit. But then again the way he does it, nobody else does it because it’s so weird and that album was so heavy, it’s got this weird production that at that time no one was doing.

I got into hip-hop through the whole Def Jam thing. When that kicked off we loved it, me and my brother. I remember seeing Kerry King on the Beastie Boys video. I’d gotten into the electronica thing earlier through the industrial stuff we were into, like Nine Inch Nails and Ministry. I remember me and my brother going to see Einstürzende Neubauten and just freaked out. It was so extreme. I’d always been very attracted to electronic music and hip-hop, especially as a drummer. I always liked the idea of messing about with drum beats, chopping them in, playing around. I almost picked DJ Shadow ‘Organ Donor’ for this list. I’m kind of bummed that I didn’t get that one in here. Next list, okay?
Sometimes I’ll go to the studio with Laima and I’ll bring back a drum loop and I piece it together and start something else. And then sometimes I send my recordings to friends and they’re like can I mess with this? Yes, please! Please destroy this. I love that music has no boundaries. Next year I’m going to be 50 but I have so much to learn.
