Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

I heard their first album, Amber, and I really got into IDM. But this album by Autechre is probably the most interesting one because it’s in between the first ones that are very melodic and simple and the ones later on that are more experimental. Chiastic Slide has got a beautiful quality about it and at the same time it’s taking it a little bit further and making it a little less cheesy because, as much as I love Autechre, they are a bit cheesy. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing – I like cheesy music. Depeche Mode are really cheesy and I love ’em. And so are the first Autechre albums. They are fantastic. And that one’s got a mixture of the cheesy qualities of the first albums and the weird interesting structures of the later albums. So that’s why I picked it.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Tyondai Braxton, Roly Porter
