Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

A guy in Paris runs the label Serendip and he was in touch with Peter Weiss from Hypnobeat and he heard my ‘Actio Reactio’ track, from Werkdiscs in 2013. He sent it over to Peter and he said, ‘This sounds a bit like what you did in the 80s.’ I’ve never heard of them before and Peter got in touch with me, and he was like, ‘This is amazing, it has the same attitude as us, what machines did you use?’ I said, ‘an 808 and a 707,’ and we started talking. Then we both got invited to play in Paris. We were like, ‘Okay if we’re going to be in Paris together, we may as well bring our machines and try and play live together’. We’d never met before! We just played with three 808s and one 707. Sometimes we’d have one 303, sometimes we just stuck to drum machines and effects. Their Prototech stuff from the early 80s sounds so modern and so amazing and it’s something that I could easily play in my DJ sets. And it was a huge honour that someone who’s been making music for over thirty years felt like I was his musical soulmate.
