Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. Led ZeppelinLed Zeppelin III

I just like the feel of the album. I’ve gone off them a bit over the years but they were so important to me. When I was a kid, they were IT. They replaced the Beatles. They didn’t ever make a dodgy album. The songs were very economically written. I gather live they can be quite self-indulgent, with 25-minute drum and guitar solos, but on their albums they were really tidy and the arrangements were spot on. If they did have long guitar solos they were good. There was no noodling. My favourite song on the album is ‘Since I’ve Been Loving You’ – Jimmy Page’s guitar playing is absolutely brilliant.
