3. The DoorsLA Woman
I watched the Doors film When You’re Strange on DVD the other day. There was lots of unusual footage that had never been seen, particularly of Jim Morrison. I heard ‘Riders on the Storm’ on the soundtrack and it reminded me of what a great band they were. I bought LA Woman when it came out. They were incredibly pretentious and up their own arses, but they were still brilliant. They were top musicians – they all had a really unusual approach to what they did, plus they didn’t have a bass player so that gave them an interesting sound. But Morrison was a bit of a plonker. He was just a great looking guy with a great voice, but the poetry side of things is a bit embarrassing. There’s a live album [Absolutely Live] with a version of ‘Celebration Of The Lizard’ on it which is unbelievably bad. It was unlistenable. But you know, it was probably great in a concert situation because he was such an icon.
