Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6. CreamFresh Cream

Cream was my band. My idea. I got Eric on board immediately and Jack was suggested. Thing is, I’d already had a big falling out with him but anyway, I decided to bury that hatchet and get him in. It worked, pretty much straight away. I’d already been running Graham Bond’s band so we took over the circuit that Graham Bond was playing for a bit more money. They were a bit small scale for us as it turned out. But we had all these gigs booked, we were contracted to do them and in the end there were more people outside the gigs than inside them. The crowds had doubled from what we were playing with Graham Bond. That record went into the charts in America and that was the breakthrough. That did surprise me, yes. I knew we were good. The last couple of years with Graham Bond had been good and to me, Cream were just a carry-on from that. But we exploded, and that was really the reason the band stayed together, because we were so successful. The records were really good.
