Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

12. Talk TalkLaughing Stock

I was and still am very obsessed with this record because it makes me feel so many things – the arrangement, the story of how they made it, how they did whatever with the music without thinking about the record label, just being free. I learned a lot about production from this record, I really liked their approach to editing. There’s a good article about the way they recorded Laughing Stock – for example, they would get the best harmonica player and make him play for hours, and at the end they would pick 10 seconds of what he’s recorded, or something. They made a drummer play the same beat for a whole day, a super long time, then they edited it. This album is all about editing. I didn’t know how hard they had gone with it, but it seems like they went very far.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Kevin Richard Martin, Jas Shaw, Guy Garvey, Olafur Arnalds
