Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6.

Ornette Coleman – Science Fiction

Quite pivotal to me, for the voice and the piano, since I played virtually all the songs on this record with Bobby Bradford (listen to the solo on the record), Mark Dresser, Butch Morris, James Newton and others in Los Angeles. I can still hear the order of the tracks, Ornette’s playing and Asha Pulthi’s voice is floating with the horns playing the melody along with her.

I can see why Ornette would have chosen her. One has only to hear her sing ‘The Devil Is Loose’ to see why. I am going to sing that song if I can coordinate voice and scarf. Well, forget about the scarf. I will blind myself.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Lord Spikeheart, Tom Ravenscroft
