Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

5.

Doris Day – Love Me or Leave Me

The best legato in the business. Those who think of her as a pollyanna, [need to] listen.

Listen to ‘Love Me or Leave Me’ or ‘When I Fall in Love’ and hear the most exquisite legato, and breath control. [She had] an undamaged voice, like Jo Stafford, whom I also adore for her immaculate phrasing, complete dedication to the song, the lyrics and the changes.

My father’s favorite singer was Jo Stafford, and it is unfortunate that I do not have a particular album with me with which to highlight her.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Lord Spikeheart, Tom Ravenscroft
