Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. Van MorrisonVeedon Fleece

In the last ten years Van Morrison has been a major inspiration for me. Maybe more than anyone else in the entire world of music. He has a similar project to Joni, in that he has a world of poetry in his mind mixed with this very legitimate love of music outside of pop music. That’s something I was thinking about a lot in the last year and a half while I was making this new Destroyer record, trying to make it sound like an amalgamation of shit I like, but also to make it more than that. Something that makes sense as a complete vision. They always seem to do it, those two: Van and Joni. It seems to be very much a part of them and not just a put-on or something they’re just dabbling in.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Paddy Shine, Lee Buford, Kid Millions
