Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. John PhillipsJohn Phillips (John, The Wolf King Of L.A.)

I’d never really given John Phillips the time of day. I’d never really cared about The Mamas & The Papas, but in the late 90s amongst hipster scum there was lots of whispering about this Wolf King Of L.A. record and I finally bought it at a flea market. It’s now one of my longest-standing favourite records of all time. It’s really held up over the last 15 years. I still listen to it a shitload. There’s something about him. I find his voice and his approach to melodic and lyrical phrasing deceptively simple but also super elegant. I like that loose early 70s playing.
