Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

3. Miles DavisOn The Corner

I will admit that I’m not a heavy Miles Davis head, a lot of people I play music with and that are in the jazz scene are proper disciples to him. That said, I have heard quite a few of his records and this one hit me the earliest. The reasons why I like it are the reasons a lot of people dislike it. I like the recording quality, I think the overdubs were done without any tracking, it’s sporadic and experimental. I also enjoy Herbie Hancock on this album. It comes back to this chaotic fusion jazz, something about it is like dance music to me.

I remember hearing it for the first time and I still don’t think there’s anything like it. It’s not stereo, it’s mono-stereo in this strange juxtaposition where you can hear the live element but also the overdubs and it’s so chaotic. I just love the child that’s built out of that process

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Tanya Tagaq, Primal Scream, Kurt Vile, Boris Blank of Yello
