I’ve gotten into Joni Mitchell pretty hardcore over the last five years, she’s a pretty interesting character. It’s her eighth album and seated in the middle of her career, and kind of a dollar-bin record that I had looked over for quite a while. When I first heard it I thought it was so interesting because it bridges the gap between her kind of jazzier era and the Ladies Of The Canyon vibe, she’s really coming out on her own. Lyrically, something I’ve always avoided is leaning on ‘what’s my lifestyle now’ which is being on the road and this bizarre reality that I feel not many people have the privilege to relate to. But for that record lyrically it was what I needed at the right time. I was really worn out from touring and feeling really weird about my place and how to communicate to people. It’s about heartache but it’s also about being on the road and being in the studio late at night. It’s so literal that I really took solace in it.
