Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6. Townes van ZandtTownes Van Zandt

Townes Van Zandt is one of those artists from whom you can pick so many different records as a favourite. I chose this one because it features a couple of my favourite songs of his, one of those being ‘Fare Thee Well, Miss Carousel’, which I think is my favourite song of his, and the other being ‘Waiting Around To Die’, which is obviously one of his most well-known, well-written songs. I think I got into his music in my 20s. I had heard him before, and then my bandmate Ben Chisholm was a big fan of Townes’. So he sort of reintroduced me to his music, and then I got hooked again. I would say the country side of music by late-60s singer-songwriters like Loretta Lynn, Townes Van Zandt, and Patsy Cline has had a big impact on me generally. I love Joan Baez as well, but I think I was more drawn to the country/folk element of that era than the Bob Dylans of this world.
