Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. Black SabbathVol. 4

This is one of the albums that my dad introduced me to when I was young. I was probably in my early teens or something like that. It was an instant hit, and over time, I think it became even more so. It became one of my favourites, I think because ‘Changes’ is one of my favourite Black Sabbath songs. Maybe that’s strange, because it’s such a ballad compared to a lot of their early stuff. I think I also felt drawn to them in a similar way to the Fleetwood Mac and Lindsey Buckingham situation, because Ozzy’s vocal ranges are perfect for my voice, and I loved singing along with him. I still love singing along with him.

When I had a karaoke phase a few years ago, ‘Snowblind’ was my go-to, which is also from this album, of course. Some of my favourite songs are on this record. That little breakdown in ‘Snowblind’ where he sings, “My eyes are blind but I can see,” and then there’s a guitar solo is just so good. It’s so fun. I think that when I sing along with something like ‘Snowblind’, it feels really natural and unforced. I like that energy, so I’m sure I’ve put that into some of my music too. I think the songs that I enjoy playing most are those songs that feel very natural to my vocal range. It feels so good in my body. I think maybe Ozzy taught me that.
