Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

13. MisfitsEarth A.D.

When I was maybe about 13, I finally had a best friend. We loved The Smiths and The Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees together, and her parents had money, so she had whatever records she wanted, whereas I’d have to save up. I went to this cassette store – the one where my sister’d got me Hüsker Dü, and I got this record by Misfits. It was Earth A.D. All that other stuff, it was great – I still love it, always will – but this was my little private tape cassette that I listened to in my room.

I went to spend the night at my friend’s house and we stole her mom’s car. I had my cassette in my bag. She’d never heard it before and we put it in, and all night long, ’til like four in the morning, we just drove around bumfuck nowhere town, listening to Earth A.D. for hours. I love speaking about that memory ‘cus we had so much driving around.
