Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

5. Bruce SpringsteenNebraska

I grew up, we all grew up, knowing who Bruce Springsteen was. My step-dad was really into him, of course – it was the 70s – but I never ever ever ever got into him until I had a lover. I think I was twenty-something…twenty-four? And he put on the record…and I was like WHAT RECORD IS THIS. I knew it was Bruce Springsteen, but I’d never heard him sing to me like that. How nice of him. I fell in love with the record. It just reminded me of…when you’re walking outside in the dark, at night, alone, under the stars, you can’t see very well, but you kinda feel…you feel so alone but you also feel stimulated somehow. I don’t know how to describe it, but there’s like a strange awareness of nature. I love that record. I love what he shared.
