Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

5. PixiesBossanova

Everyone goes for the big ones with Steve Albini don’t they? Fair enough, they are great. But… I actually thought "this is amazing" when I first heard it. Having read a few things about the record since then, I always find it funny that Black Francis wrote the lyrics about ten minutes before they recorded the songs, or something like that. In that way it’s very different to the other records where the songs were incredibly rehearsed. Which is brave, and I like that, and when you do something like that it adds a certain something to the music. I wouldn’t have really guessed that on listening, though. It does have a feel of David Lynch. Like with aliens but with actual, interesting ideas. Yeah alright!
