Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

12. Grace JonesLiving My Life

I have no idea when I first heard her – I mean Grace Jones is someone who’s just been in my life for years. I think even she was maybe in the CD encyclopaedia too. I remember just knowing her music from a pretty young age. She’s just such, again, a powerful female. I went to see the documentary [Bloodlight And Bami] a few years ago. It was great to see in the cinema, because it’s like going to one of her concerts. There is this long footage of her in concert. It’s just like, ‘wow, this person is crazy.’ As in, not crazy mad, well maybe a touch, but no, just crazy good.

This specific album is another one of my car albums. It’s so well written and there’s just so much attitude. You can totally sing along. She just has this power. It’s been very important during this time, especially during the lockdown, to surround myself with powerful females. To see right now that you can do this by yourself.

I think she’s the only person that can get away with putting champagne and oysters on every single rider. Always demanding it backstage and she turns up with her oyster knife…
