Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. GuruJazzmatazz Volume 1

It’s one of those that I listened to since I was a kid. My brother had it on CD and I used to steal it off him and then it turned out it was on the Cindy Crawford workout tape that made my sister lock us out of the living room; she’d be like, ‘no one comes in for an hour’. It was just everywhere. It’s a very well-made record. I saw him in the Jazz Cafe in London in 2007 or so. Sadly he passed away some years ago but it was a great concert.

This is another one of my car CDs. It’s got this positive attitude and it’s just very well produced. That’s my theme, I suppose. It’s definitely what I needed during lockdown. That’s why they became the car CDs. I needed some positivity and these well produced beats really helped, especially as with the album I was programming the beats and I recorded the drums live with it with my friend, from Exploded View, Martin [Thulin]. He played them live but I programmed all the drums and I think that’s why I needed some drum input in my head while I was doing the album.
