I think most of the albums anyone chooses will signify particular points in their life, which is why a lot of the records I’ve chosen come from a similar period – from mid 70s to late 70s, when I was at my most susceptible to being influenced, I suppose. And I think late 70s was when I was just coming into my own, playing in bands myself and venturing away from home
Television just came along for me, and I just love Marquee Moon; it’s just that guitar riff it starts with. It captures your imagination immediately, it’s so edgy and angular. Tom Verlaine’s playing is really what marked Television. Also [it’s] his voice, I suppose, but his guitar playing is really what stands him out from the crowd. It’s so emotive and unusual, and I was just drawn to it. You listen to the rest of that album, and it has such peculiar songs, yet somehow they seep into your consciousness.
