Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

12. Cocteau TwinsTreasure

I love this album. The great inventive melody lines and Liz Fraser’s voice, the way the wordless lyrics and her voice melt together, like molten light. I like how much this music seems so out of place, from another time, without being sure if this is a nostalgia for the past or the future. Other singers who can do similar things with their voices and their words are Sidsel Endresen and Jenny Hval, who are both Norwegian and both able to dissolve and animate the words with their voices – without ever losing meaning – in the same otherworldly fashion.
