John Carpenter Unveils Second Movie Themes Anthology

'Anthology II (Movie Themes 1976-1988)' is part of an ongoing series of retrospective releases looking over Carpenter's back catalogue

John Carpenter is releasing a collection of reworked movie themes that he created across a 12-year period in the ’70s and ’80s.

Out in October, Anthology II (Movie Themes 1976-1988) is the second instalment in a series of retrospective releases taking a look over Carpenter’s discography, with the first, also focusing on movie themes, having come out in 2017. This latest release includes music from films such as Escape From New York, Assault On Precinct 13 and the first three Halloween movies, and all of the featured material has been re-recorded by Carpenter and his collaborators Daniel Davies and Cody Carpenter.

To mark the release’s announcement, Carpenter has shared the opening track, ‘Chariots Of Pumpkins’ from Halloween III, which you can listen to above. "This piece was made for someone else’s movie, the Tommy Lee Wallace-directed Halloween III," Carpenter said in a statement. "I don’t remember what his specific direction for me was for the main titles, but I wanted to reflect a kind of science fiction feel. The sound has been updated and it was fun to redo this song. The three of us, using modern and updated sounds and production, has influenced the overall feel of the song."

Sacred Bones will release Anthology II (Movie Themes 1976-1988) on October 6, 2023.
