Isis – ‘In Essense’

I've always loved this record. It's one of those house records where the British producers just got it right. And it's one that every time I used to play at the Electric Chair when we used to warm up – because warming up was a thing then; you would warm up for the American DJs like Theo Parrish and the Carl Craig, all our heroes. It was such an exciting time, and this was my little show off record, because it wasn't a pumper, it wasn't a banger, it wasn't one of those EDM moments where the broken men of rave are still DJing in black t-shirts and making heart signs to children younger than their kids. It was a very beautiful sound.

The American guys always, always asked, ‘What the fuck is this record?’ They were always really surprised that it was British, and I don't think that was them being patronizing. But it feels like a jazz record. It’s a house record but it's a jazz record. And it's been one of my secret weapons for years.
