"This process is positive but also challenging and ongoing," a statement said of the unnamed group member's recovery

Massive Attack have cancelled a number of their upcoming tour dates due to a band member's recent battle with a "serious illness."

In a post shared by the group on social media, they said the unnamed band member had "been contending with a serious illness" for the "past few months," but was now in recovery. Speaking further of the recovery, they said: "This process is positive but also challenging and ongoing, which unfortunately means that Massive Attack are not presently in a position to fulfil our live shows scheduled for May, June and July 2022."

The statement continued: "The band deeply regret any inconvenience or disappointment caused – particularly to the fans with whom it's always an honour to engage, and to our production crew who, owing to other global events, have already had to wait too long to do what they do so well. We thank you for your patience and support."

This means the band will no longer play at festivals such as Barcelona's Primavera Sound, Oslo's Pipfest and Milan's Summer Festival this summer, while other headline shows in Rome, Düsseldorf and elsewhere around Europe have also been shelved for now. As it stands, it appears the band will still play two headline shows in Edinburgh and Dublin in late August, however.

Last year, the band pulled out of a show in Liverpool after it transpired that the gig was going to be held at a venue where an electronic arms fair had recently taken place.
