Ben UFO Curates EP In ‘Melodies Record Club’ Series

The UK DJ has selected tracks by Laurie Spiegel and Olof Dreijer to appear on the second instalment of the run of EPs on Floating Points and Mafalda's label

Ben UFO has curated the second instalment in the Melodies Record Club series, a run of EPs on Floating Points and Mafalda’s Melodies International label.

The series, which launched earlier this year with curation from Four Tet, sees various DJs select two tracks each to be reissued on vinyl. Ben UFO’s picks are Laurie Spiegel’s ‘Drums’, from her 1980 album The Expanding Universe, and ‘Echoes From Mamori’, a track by The Knife’s Olof Dreijer. You can check out the latter just below.

Speaking about his selections in an Instagram post, Ben UFO said: "The two sides are from very different eras and situations, but I think they work so nicely next to each other, sonically and conceptually. To me, Laurie Spiegel’s Drums’ is this perfect decades-old example of almost-club-music born out of advanced studio experimentation, and Olof’s track, which had previously only been released on a very limited CD single, came across to me as almost the opposite – a beautiful, quite direct club track stretched out and repurposed as a soundtrack for an exhibition space. Neither have been available in this format before, on a loud 45rpm vinyl single."

The next instalment in the Melodies Record Club series will come from Hunee, while further editions will include selections by Josey Rebelle, Gilles Peterson, Daphni and label owners Floating Points and Mafalda, among others.

Melodies International will release Melodies Record Club #002: Ben UFO Selects on October 1, 2021.
