Daring Is Important: Gudrun Gut's Favourite Albums
Jeremy Allen , September 11th, 2019 08:52

Leading light of the Berlin underground Gudrun Gut guides Jeremy Allen through 13 favourite records - she wanted them all to be Neu! but as there weren't enough, there's the Bad Seeds, Throbbing Gristle, Lana Del Rey and much more. Gudrun Gut portrait by Mv Kummer

Gudrun Gut has been pushing boundaries for decades. The Berliner was a member of Einstürzende Neubauten, and went on to record with Malaria!, Mania D, Matador and more. She’s also released three solo albums in her own name, including last year’s pounding, breathtaking Moment. Then there’s the radio shows, numerous collaborations, festival curation, lectures and her own record label Monika Enterprises, named after a suicidal fish.

Now four pristine re-workings of the best tracks on Moment are being added to that pristine discography. There’s a new pop dimension to  'Boys Keep Swinging’, a "feminist text" according to Gut, remixed by Pilocka Krach on a version you imagine David Bowie would have loved: "it's a very cool version - she's such a rock star!" Gut enthuses. Marco Hass, who mixed the album, takes the hypnotic 'Lover’ somewhere yet more dark and sexy under the nom-de-guerre T. Raumschmiere. Paul Frick reworked 'Musik’ as Gudrun simultaneously reworked a Brandt Brauer Frick track from Miami, and then there’s the stern feminist riposte of 'Baby I Can Drive My Car’, reimagined by Dasha Rush. “I knew about Dasha Rush and I thought she might be cool because she’s one of the top techno acts, but she also does some super experimental stuff, so I thought she would be the perfect person who understands both sides of what I wanted. At first I didn't dare ask her, but she said yes and I’m very happy with the results."

Malaria! Compiled 2.0 and the Full Emotion double record are 11th October 2019. Gudrun Gut's Moment Remixes is out now. Click the photo of Gudrun Cut to begin reading her Baker's Dozen selections
