Cracking Stuff: The Quietus Reissues & Compilations Of 2014 So Far
John Doran , July 21st, 2014 06:25

Here is tQ's half year non-studio album list as voted for by Luke Turner, Laurie Tuffrey, Sophie Coletta and John Doran (who compiled and wrote the feature)

Last week we published our albums of the year so far list and as tradition dictates, hot on its heels, here is the Reissues, Compilations and Mixes chart to go with it. Comprised of releases that came out between January 1 and June 30 (although some readers may spot a couple that came out late last year), this chart is, in some ways, even more important to the Quietus than the studio albums list. Or at least if you add the two charts together you should get a clear idea of what our aesthetic is.

I think you can tell a lot about tQ by what isn't in these charts as well as what is. No doubt some readers will be mortified to not see the inclusion of Slint's Spiderland. And don't get me wrong it's a fine album, it's just that I personally listened to it enough when it came out and feel that it hasn't aged particularly well. More to the point, I know some of you feel the same way. Anyway, I don't have the time to be going back to listen to the same canonical albums over and over again when I could be listening to amazing new albums like Olga Bell's Krai or new to me albums such as Annette Peacock's astounding I Belong To A World That's Destroying Herself. (As someone pointed out to me recently, this reissue of her debut - formerly known as Revenge - has only been released in America so far. But we live in hope that such a brilliant artist will get the massive worldwide audience she deserves.) That's not to say there aren't a couple of classics on there… it would be kind of ridiculous to leave Albert Ayler's Spiritual Unity off. I discovered him myself, relatively late in life, via a list on this site, and can't express how much happiness some of his recordings have brought me. I hope other people like me take a punt on this extraordinary album.

If you want to spank some cash on music right away and you're interested in value for money, then look no further than The World Is Yours 72 track compilation for a fiver! And what's even better is the cash goes to the really worthwhile cause of remembering Peter Kemp and raising money for some of his favourite causes including The Gate Community Centre and Smallsteps children's charity.

Anyway, if madness, screen blindness, exhaustion and mental decrepitude don't get to us first, keep them peeled for more half year charts coming up soon and some Spotify playlists. But for the time being feel the width, feel the length, feel the quality and feel the mellow being harshed by terrifying techno and death metal trilogies.

I'm sure you have your own views on what constitute the best mixes and reissues etc. So please share them with us below. And if you've got any sense you'll get the Elijah and Skilliam mix on right now. Good times.
