Jlin Returns To Planet Mu With Mini-Album, ‘Perspective’

The six-track release takes in electronic versions of tracks she made with Third Coast Percussion

Jlin has a new mini-album on the way.

Spanning six tracks, Perspectives marks the US producer’s first release since 2021’s Embryo EP. The new record comprises electronic versions of compositions that she made with Chicago-based ensemble Third Coast Percussion. You can listen to lead cut ‘Fourth Perspective’ just below.

Speaking about the new release, Jlin said: "Working with [Third Coast Percussion] was a rewarding experience. I love their constant driving ambition. When I would go to their studio we would experiment as much as we could, and that to me is the beauty of composing."

The producer also added that working with dance companies on a number of commissions in recent years had influenced her work going forward. "Working with [choreographer] Kyle [McGregor] and [his dance company] AIM, I felt the need to incorporate more organic percussion and drums," she said. "The raw, visceral nature of Kyle’s choreography demanded a more tactile, grounded sound. I believe that music and dance are deeply interconnected, and the rhythm and physicality of organic percussion needs to mirror the dancers’ movements whether it is conceptually or abstract."

Planet Mu will release Perspective on September 29, 2023.
