Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, a founding member of Black Midi, has died aged 26.

Black Midi’s label Rough Trade shared a statement from the musician’s family via social media, which said the following:

“It is with deep sadness that we as a family regret to inform you that Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin has died after a long battle with his mental health.

“A talented musician and a kind, loving young man finally succumbed; despite all efforts. Matt was 26 years old. He will always be loved.

“Please take a moment to check in with your loved ones so we can stop this happening to our young men.”

Kwasniewski-Kelvin formed Black Midi with Geordie Greep, Cameron Picton and Morgan Simpson in 2017, and performed on their debut album Schlagenheim which was released in 2019. In January 2021 the band announced that he was to take time apart from the band due to mental health issues.

In a statement announcing his departure, he said: “I’ve been taking some time off from the band as I have been mentally unwell. Because of this, I haven’t featured on forthcoming material. I’ll be back soon.” The remaining members of Black Midi said at the time that they were “fully behind our best mate in his recovery.”

Kwasniewski-Kelvin did not perform on their second album Cavalcade, though was credited as a songwriter on two tracks. The remaining members of Black Midi split in 2024.

Kwasniewski-Kelvin had continued to perform live appearances in following his departure from the band, and also appeared on Wu-Lu’s 2022 album Loggerhead. In 2024, he self-released a single taking aim at the Labour Party and in support of a free Palestine.

Rough Trade added in the caption to their post sharing news of his death:

“Rough Trade Records would like to extend deepest sympathy to the Kwasniewski-Kelvin family who have shared this statement on the tragic passing of founding black midi member Matt – an incredibly talented person who will be truly missed.

“If you are struggling with mental health issues please reach out to your loved ones or one of the range of charities such as Mind, CALM and Samaritans who provide services and someone to talk to in any time of need.”

In the UK, Samaritans can be contacted here or you can call on 116 123. Other mental health helplines around the world can be found here.
