Los Angeles-based vocalist Kelela is currently playing a run of shows around Europe, heading to London’s Oslo venue for Elsewhere festival this Saturday, May 3, and Everywhere festival in Nottingham the day after, and coinciding with that, she’s just released a new track. ‘Want It’ is a collaboration with Chicago singer Tink and DJ Dahi, the prolific producer whose previous credits include work with Kendrick Lamar, Drake and Travi$ Scott. It’s part of the Songs From Scratch collaborations series, which has already featured Lunice, Angel Haze, Danny Brown, Araabmuzik and others.
Whether it’s indicative of her debut proper/follow-up to last year’s brilliant Cut 4 Me mixtape remains to be heard, though it takes a different tack to the dense layers of ‘The High’, posted earlier this year, as well as her recent collaboration with Bok Bok, ‘Melba’s Call’, setting her trademark aerated, massed vocals inside Dahi’s sparse, melted-down drum patterns.
